Legendary Mercedes and Porsche Driver Hans Herrmann Passes Away – The Story Behind 'Lucky Hans'

Hans Herrmann, a legendary driver for Mercedes and Porsche and a highly respected figure in motorsport, has passed away at the age of 96. He began his career as a pastry chef but his passion for cars led him to racing. He excelled in Formula 1, the European Hill Climb Championship, and the World Sportscar Championship, culminating in his victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970. He became known as 'Lucky Hans' due to two serious accidents from which he narrowly escaped. After retiring from active racing, he remained involved in motorsport, supporting young talents and participating in classic car rallies. He was kidnapped in 1991 but released after a ransom was paid, with the case remaining unsolved.
