AKEL: 'Freeze' on EU-Mercosur Deal a Victory for Farmers and European Societies

AKEL welcomes the European Parliament's decision to freeze the EU-Mercosur agreement and refer it to the European Court of Justice to examine its compatibility with the EU Treaties, describing it as a “victory for farmers and the peoples of Europe.” The party argues that the agreement would open the door to massive imports of agricultural products, undermining social, labor, and health standards, and harming small and medium-sized farmers. AKEL emphasizes that the agreement places the interests of multinational corporations above public health and rural development. The European Parliament's decision is seen as a barrier against this trend and a message against closed-door deals negotiated by governments without the participation of citizens and national parliaments. The initiative to freeze the agreement is attributed to the Left Group in the European Parliament, in which AKEL participates, and was adopted by MEPs from all political groups. AKEL points out that MEPs from DISY chose to vote against the resolution, thus supporting the interests of multinational corporations. This decision highlights the importance of defending the interests of farmers and European societies at the European level.
