US Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Officials Over Protest Crackdown

Published January 15, 2026, 21:10

The US government has imposed economic sanctions on Iranian security officials, accusing them of suppressing recent protests in the country. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent condemned the violent response to peaceful demonstrations, including mass killings and attacks on the injured and hospitals. The sanctions target Ali Larijani, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as well as four other security officials. The sanctions aim to freeze the assets of those targeted in the US and prohibit transactions with them by American companies and citizens. The US government states that it will identify and seize any funds illegally transferred from Iran. Bescent expressed US support for the Iranian people and their legitimate demands, while warning the Iranian leadership about the consequences of its actions. This move is part of ongoing US efforts to pressure Iran over its domestic policies and human rights violations. The sanctions are expected to worsen the already tense economic situation in Iran, while the Iranian government has not yet issued an official response.
