Facing the UN Secretary-General's Reports on Cyprus

Significant developments are expected in the Cyprus issue with the completion of the UN Secretary-General's reports on his Good Offices and UNFICYP. The UN Secretary-General is expected to urge Messrs. Christodoulides and Erhurman to begin substantive talks, while his special representative, Kazim Dian, will brief the Security Council on January 15, 2026. The lack of progress for eight years creates pressure for immediate action, as time works against Cyprus. President Christodoulides is called upon to avoid delay and combine talks with gestures of goodwill, such as Confidence-Building Measures. A joint statement by Christodoulides and Erhurman accepting existing convergences and committing to honest discussion of pending issues could be a significant step. The multilateral conference on Cyprus will determine the course of negotiations.
