European Commission VP Roxana Minzatu: AI Should Not Replace Human Judgement or Control Work

European Commission Vice-President Roxana Minzatu, in an interview with "Phileleftheros", emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) raises concerns about job losses, but the main challenge is to manage the transition properly. The EU is facing labor and skills shortages, a problem that also affects Cyprus. Minzatu highlighted the importance of social protection, fair wages, safe working conditions, and work-life balance for a resilient and competitive Europe. The Commissioner stated that AI can offer opportunities for innovation and productivity, but its use must be responsible, with guarantees for privacy, transparency, and workers' rights. The EU's position is that AI should support workers and not replace human judgement. According to IMF estimates, up to 60% of jobs could be affected by AI, underscoring the need for investment in education and skills development. The EU is seeking to ensure that workers and future generations have the skills required for the jobs of the future. Minzatu stressed that the European Commission is giving great emphasis to adapting its policies to new technologies and changes in the labor market, with the aim of creating quality jobs and promoting social justice.
