Man Posed as Pilot to Fly for Free Hundreds of Times

A 33-year-old man from Canada, Dallas Pokornik, is facing fraud charges in the US after allegedly posing as a pilot to obtain hundreds of free flights. Pokornik, who worked as a flight attendant from 2017 to 2019, used his old employee ID to get free tickets from three major airlines, knowing they were fraudulent. In one instance, he even secured a jumpseat in the cockpit, which is illegal for non-certified pilots. The authorities are still investigating how Pokornik managed to deceive the airlines for so long, as employees typically use database-connected cards to verify their identity. However, the rules are more relaxed for leisure travel. The case has drawn significant attention, reminiscent of the film “Catch Me If You Can” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Pokornik’s alleged fraud spanned four years and involved submitting false information to the airlines. If convicted, Pokornik faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge regarding how he managed to perpetrate the fraud for such an extended period.
