Cyprus Audit Oversight Authority Dealing with Numerous Complaints

The Cyprus Public Audit Oversight Authority (CPAOA) is currently handling a significant number of complaints and disciplinary cases, as stated by its Director-General, Panos Prodromitis, to the House Finance Committee. These cases originate from the Authority's inspections and audits conducted by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC). Mr. Prodromitis explained that some cases are before the disciplinary committee for potential penalties, others are under investigation, and for some, the appointment of an investigating officer is pending. The Authority emphasizes the need for more personnel to effectively conduct investigations. The CPAOA's budget for 2026 is balanced at €1.9 million, the same level as in 2025. According to legislation, 20% of the funding (€0.36 million) comes from the Republic of Cyprus, while 80% (€1.4 million) is covered by recognized Audit Bodies, Registered Auditors, and Registered Audit Firms. Notably, in 2025, a disciplinary penalty of €60,000 was imposed on an audit firm for the first time. Furthermore, the CPAOA signed a cooperation protocol with its US counterpart, facilitating Cypriot companies' access to the American capital market and enhancing Cyprus's credibility.
