Brain 'Switch' for Hypertension Discovered

New research has shed light on a small area of the brain that appears to play a significant role in increasing blood pressure. This area, which controls basic functions such as breathing and heart rate, activates nerves that cause blood vessels to constrict. Experiments in mice showed that activating these nerves led to an increase in blood pressure, while suppressing them returned it to normal levels. This discovery opens new avenues for hypertension treatments that target brain activity and the sympathetic nervous system. However, researchers emphasize that factors such as diet and lifestyle remain important for preventing and managing hypertension.
