Education in Cyprus: Increase in Students and Enrolments in 2023/2024

The school year 2023/2024 saw an increase in the total number of students and enrolments at all levels of education in Cyprus, reaching 218,129, an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous year (208,374). Simultaneously, the number of educational institutions increased to 1,368 (from 1,351 in 2022/2023) and the number of teachers to 17,298 (from 16,475). In Pre-primary and Primary Education, 38,931 children attended 778 kindergartens and nurseries, an increase of 4.2%. In Primary Education, 60,079 students attended 361 schools, an increase of 3.3%. In Secondary Education, the number of students reached 61,230 in 170 schools, an increase of 2.2%. In Tertiary Education, 57,889 students were enrolled in 59 educational institutions, an increase of 9.4%. Public expenditure on education in 2023 amounted to €1,599.2 million, representing 12.1% of the State Budget and 4.9% of Gross Domestic Product. Public expenditure per student varies depending on the level of education, with the highest expenditure recorded in Tertiary Education (€15,084). The increase in students, enrolments and teachers, as well as the increase in education expenditure, indicate the growing importance given to education in Cyprus and the effort to improve its quality and accessibility.
