Tools for Lower Energy Prices – European Federation Focuses on Bills and Home Renovation

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has published a guide titled “How to make energy markets work for consumers and deliver affordable bills”, outlining its energy policy priorities for the next decade. The report focuses on the need for greater transparency in energy bills, better price comparison tools, and the protection of consumer rights. It also highlights the importance of access to renewable energy sources and flexible offers, as well as maintaining network costs. A significant part of the report concerns the energy renovation of homes, which is considered essential for reducing costs, increasing comfort, and achieving climate goals. The BEUC also proposes funding to support consumers in transitioning to more sustainable and affordable energy solutions. The guide includes ten specific recommendations to member states, such as introducing standardized national formats for energy bills, so that consumers can more easily understand charges and consumption. It also suggests stricter enforcement of consumer rights and protection from misleading sales practices. Significant emphasis is placed on facilitating access to renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, and promoting innovative technologies. The report acknowledges that the electricity grid needs to evolve to support the increasing use of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. Finally, the BEUC emphasizes the need to accelerate the transition from fossil fuel heating to renewable sources, while also providing consumers with stronger protection, better financing options, and independent advice.
