The Powder Keg of the Eastern Mediterranean

The recent maritime boundary agreement between Lebanon and Cyprus is a significant success for the Christodoulides government, as Cyprus managed to bypass Turkey's expansionist policy and secure its maritime rights. However, Greece has not proceeded with a similar agreement with Cyprus, despite repeated proposals from the Cypriot side. The author argues that Greece is undermining the interests of Cyprus, as it is not taking clear political initiatives to consolidate the maritime borders of unity with Cyprus against Turkey. Furthermore, Greece "was dragged behind" Turkey on the issue of the OSCE Presidency. Cyprus has demonstrated diplomatic skill, systematically starting to delineate its EEZ with neighboring countries before the major natural gas discoveries, creating a network of delineations based on international maritime law. In contrast, Turkey persists in the theory of the "Blue Homeland" and the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum. The author concludes that the sea has borders and that the delimitation of the EEZ is necessary to protect maritime rights and prevent Turkey's expansionist claims.
