Spain: Venezuela Releases Three More Spanish Detainees

Venezuela has released three more Spanish detainees, following the release of five Spaniards last week, bringing the total number of recently released detainees to six. The Spanish government has welcomed this development as a “second very positive step”. Venezuela announced yesterday the release of 116 political prisoners. Three of the latest released detainees hold dual citizenship, Spanish and Venezuelan. The Spanish Foreign Minister has called on the Venezuelan government to continue the releases, as it is estimated that between 800 and 1,200 people are being held for political reasons in the country. The release of the prisoners had been promised under pressure from the United States.
