Kapodistrias: The First to Include Cyprus Within the Borders of Greece

Yannis Smaragdis's film “Kapodistrias” highlights the personality and work of the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of Kapodistrias for Cyprus, as he was the first to officially include the island within the rightful borders of Greece. This was based on Kapodistrias's Cypriot roots, through his mother, Adamantia Gonemi, but mainly on the fact that the Cypriots, after the massacres of July 1821, self-identified as Greeks and made significant contributions to the Greek Revolution. The Declaration of Cypriot refugees in 1821 demonstrated their desire for connection with Greece. Kapodistrias, responding to a question from the British Undersecretary of Defense, defined the borders of Greece based on language and religion, thus including Cyprus.
