11,000 Fireworks Confiscated in 2024 - "Arriving from the Occupied Territories"

The Cyprus Police continues its campaign to prevent and combat youth delinquency related to the use of firecrackers and bonfires. So far in 2024, 11,000 items of fireworks have been confiscated, mainly firecrackers, while 20,500 items were confiscated in 2023. The Police warns of the dangers lurking from the use of these objects. The situation is considered worrying, as local authority crews are already collecting wood and other materials intended for bonfires. It is recalled that Easter 2023 saw serious injuries and deaths from the use of firecrackers and bonfires, including amputations. The Police has intensified patrols in areas where violations are likely to occur, while also conducting awareness campaigns in schools and through the media. Also, checks are being increased to detect the illegal entry of explosives into the Republic. According to the Police, the majority of firecrackers come from Turkey and enter the free areas through the occupied territories, while others come from Spain and Poland through legal channels. The Police continues its efforts to address the problem and protect citizens.
