UN Security Council Holds Closed Consultations on Cyprus

The UN Security Council was briefed on Thursday by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, Kazim Diagne, on the content of the two reports of the Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue. The briefing took place in closed consultations in New York. Mr. Diagne declined to make statements after the briefing, stating that the process was still in an “early stage.” The Security Council meeting to renew the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is scheduled for January 29th. The Security Council briefing is part of the process of assessing the situation on the island and deciding whether to renew the mandate of UNFICYP. The presence of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus is important for maintaining stability and preventing clashes between the two communities.
