Cyprus Talks Stall - Focus Shifts to Confidence-Building Measures

Talks on the Cyprus issue remain stalled, with Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) still pending. In this context, the Christodoulides government is considering unilateral measures to revitalize trust between the two communities, focusing on areas such as health and the economy. However, Turkish Cypriot leader Erhurman appears cautious, stating that he has not received a formal proposal and that unilateral measures do not require joint approval. There are disagreements regarding specific measures, such as the proposal to abolish VAT on Greek Cypriot products imported into the occupied territories, which Erhurman rejected. The momentum that had been created after Erhurman's election appears to have subsided, and there is fear that the hardening of positions will return before negotiations even begin. Cyprus's EU presidency and a video alleging corruption have overshadowed the Cyprus issue on the domestic agenda.
