Fuel Pump Scam in Greece Nets Over €25 Million

Published January 21, 2026, 13:42

A criminal organization in Greece defrauded consumers through a widespread fuel pump scam, accumulating profits exceeding €25 million over five years. The organization, led by a man involved in 20 gas station companies, used specialized software to manipulate the pumps, retaining a percentage of the fuel (typically 10%) sold to customers. The software was designed to bypass control systems and avoid detection by authorities. Technical support for the software was provided by two employees of the company that created it, and the company's owners are also among the accused. The scam was uncovered following an operation by the Greek Police (EL.AS), which simultaneously raided 20 gas stations, nine homes, and company offices. During the operation, 13 members of the organization were arrested, and five more are currently being sought. Significant amounts of electronic equipment, money, weapons, and drugs were seized. The operating licenses of 16 gas stations were revoked for two years and they were sealed. Additionally, the Authority for the Prevention of Money Laundering was informed about the ringleader and their companies, to investigate potential money laundering. The financial damage to consumers is estimated to be substantial, due to the short deliveries of fuel. The case has raised serious concerns about the security of transactions at gas stations and the effectiveness of controls. Authorities are expected to intensify inspections throughout Greece to prevent similar incidents and protect consumers.
