GESY Software - €7.6 Million Per Year with Years of Problems

Despite an annual cost of €7.6 million for maintenance and support, the GESY software continues to experience serious problems, causing hardship to patients, doctors, and pharmacists. Despite assurances that the malfunctions would be resolved within the spring, the system continues to go offline. The total cost of the initial contracts for the software amounted to €39 million for seven years. The contracts concerned the development and implementation of the Provider Portal, which is essential for issuing prescriptions, referrals, and managing the electronic patient record. The initial contract expired in September 2024 and was renewed for 20 months at the same annual cost. Problems began in October 2024 and were brought before Parliament in March 2025, with the HIO assuring that the software was reliable and that the malfunctions would be resolved. However, in recent weeks, serious problems have been recorded again, with the system being slow or unresponsive, causing delays in patient service. The President of the Pan-Cypriot Association of Pharmacists stated that the system remains slow and sometimes 'crashes', creating queues in pharmacies. The problem affects the recording and execution of prescriptions, resulting in inconvenience for citizens.
