Christodoulides Rushes to Brussels for Greenland After Presenting Presidency Priorities

President Christodoulides will travel to Brussels on Thursday to participate in an emergency European Council regarding the Greenland crisis, which will also be the first significant moment of the Cypriot Presidency in the EU. Before that, he will present the priorities of the Presidency to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where he is expected to answer questions about Greenland as well. President Christodoulides had already spoken by phone with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, to discuss developments and talks between Denmark and the US. He stressed that the Republic of Cyprus will fulfill its institutional role and make decisions as the EU. Cyprus maintains a firm position on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, which also applies to the case of Greenland. The President acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, given that convening an emergency European Council with physical presence is unusual. The EU has expressed its strong commitment to the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty, as well as its support for Denmark and Greenland. It also reaffirmed that trade threats are not a way to negotiate.
