A Europe Without Racism

Published January 25, 2026, 06:13

The European Commission has presented a new strategy to combat racism, recognizing that the problem remains deeply rooted in Europe despite previous efforts. The strategy builds on the previous Action Plan and sets three key objectives: full implementation of European anti-discrimination legislation, removing social and economic barriers for vulnerable groups, and creating anti-racism partnerships. The Commission emphasizes strengthening the enforcement of the Racial Equality Directive and more rigorously addressing hate speech, especially online, while respecting freedom of expression. At the same time, it promotes better support for victims of racism. Volt MEP Alexandra Attalidou emphasizes that these strategies will be judged by their implementation and that racism is primarily a systemic problem that manifests itself in unequal access to essential areas such as education, employment, housing, and healthcare. Therefore, binding mechanisms, transparency, and accountability of member states are required. Furthermore, Attalidou expresses concern about the increasing use of artificial intelligence and the potential to reinforce discrimination through algorithms. She stresses the need for clear rules, oversight, and protection of fundamental rights. Technology must serve equality, not reproduce prejudices. For Volt, a truly anti-racist Europe requires strong national equality bodies, funding for civil society, and the participation of communities affected by discrimination in policy-making.
