A Glimmer of Hope for Dams: Dry River Begins to Flow Again in Nata

The Dry River has begun to flow again in Nata, albeit at a reduced intensity, carrying water towards the Asprokremmos Dam and creating a cautious sense of optimism for bolstering water reserves. This was recorded on the afternoon of the last day of the year. Video and photos captured by Matthaios Vladimiros, a tavern owner in the area, document the moment, which comes at a particularly critical time for Cyprus's dams. The Asprokremmos Dam, the second largest in Cyprus, like the rest of the island’s dams, is currently below 10% of its total capacity. From October 1st to today, only 260,000 cubic meters of water have flowed into the dam, an amount experts estimate will also flow in during the next 24 hours. Despite the concerning data, the resumption of flow in the Dry River serves as a reminder that every drop counts, in a year where water management remains a critical issue.
