Can Trump Prevent Turkey from Destabilizing the Middle East?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is playing a double game in the Middle East and towards the United States, supporting Hamas in Gaza while maintaining a military presence in Syria, argues JNS editor-in-chief Jonathan Tobin. Turkey seeks to prevent Kurdish autonomy in Syria, which it believes strengthens the efforts of Kurds within Turkey. Despite these differences, Erdoğan maintains close ties with US President Donald Trump. Meirvitz, an expert on US-Turkish relations, describes the situation in Syria as a 'trainwreck' and expresses concern over Turkey's continued support for Hamas, which he characterizes as a 'terrorist organization'. He believes this stance has led Turkey into a diplomatic impasse. Meirvitz estimates that Trump is the only leader with the influence to resolve this complex issue, as he is respected by both Erdoğan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He points out that Turkey would benefit from better relations with Israel, both to exit isolation in the Eastern Mediterranean and due to the close cooperation between Israel, Greece and Cyprus in the exploitation of natural resources. However, Meirvitz warns that Trump may be too preoccupied with other foreign policy priorities to play a mediating role between Turkey and Israel, due to the multitude of international challenges facing Washington.
