New Year's celebrations have been tragically marred by incidents of violence and accidents over the past 25 years. Attacks, stampedes, and fires have resulted in numerous fatalities worldwide. A recent attack in New Orleans in 2025 saw a driver kill 14 and injure around 30. In 2017, a nightclub shooting in Istanbul claimed 39 lives, with ISIS taking responsibility. A bombing at a concert in Indonesia in 2004 resulted in 12 deaths and 32 injuries. Several stampedes have also occurred, including in Uganda in 2023 (10 deaths), Shanghai in 2015 (36 deaths), and Ivory Coast and Angola in 2013 (63 deaths). Furthermore, a fire in the Netherlands on New Year's Eve 2001 caused 14 fatalities.
