Shifting Migration Patterns in Europe

Migration to Europe is declining, largely due to border closures and improved conditions in Syria following the overthrow of Assad. According to Frontex and UN data, the land route through the Balkans has decreased by 43% in the first 11 months of 2025, following a significant drop last year. A large number of Syrians have returned to their homeland, significantly reducing asylum applications in the EU. However, experts warn that the next challenge will come from West Africa, where instability and violence, particularly in Mali and Burkina Faso, threaten to trigger new migration flows. The situation in Afghanistan, despite the harsh rule of the Taliban, has not led to the expected mass exodus, as Iran and Pakistan have already repatriated a large number of Afghan refugees.
