How the 15th of January 1950 Union Referendum Was Seen in Athens (BINTEO)

Today marks 76 years since the Union Referendum of January 15, 1950, where the Greek population of Cyprus overwhelmingly expressed their desire to unite with Greece. The referendum saw participation from 95.7% of the electorate, with 215,108 signatures in favor of union. Notably, Turkish Cypriots also participated in the process. This referendum was the culmination of long-standing union efforts, with previous initiatives taking place in 1914, 1921, and 1930. The 1950 process was particularly significant as it extended the right to vote to women for the first time and lowered the age limit. The sports club, Omonia, had also expressed its support for the referendum, calling on its members to actively participate.
