Rising Homelessness in Limassol Despite Development

Homelessness in Limassol is on a worrying rise, despite the city's economic development. The SCHEDIA Support and Rehabilitation Center, operating since 2019, has handled over 500 cases of homelessness, recording 142 new entries in 2024 alone. A significant proportion of the homeless (75%) access the center through referrals from other services or reports. The increase in homelessness is also observed among pensioners, while the lack of affordable housing is a major issue, exacerbated by renovations and demolitions of properties for land development. The SCHEDIA Center provides a range of services, including hygiene facilities, food, clothing, psychological and social support, and advice on benefits, housing, and employment. It also operates a 24-hour reporting hotline for identifying homeless individuals. In 2024, 720 counseling sessions were held. Research indicates that 53% of the homeless are struggling to secure benefits. A striking example of the desperation faced by people facing eviction is the case of a 65-year-old woman who threatened to blow up her house to prevent her eviction. This highlights the need for immediate and effective action to address the housing problem. Eviction and homelessness are directly linked, especially in areas like Limassol where land is in high demand. Overall, the SCHEDIA Center's report reveals the growing need for support for the homeless in Limassol and the need to take measures to prevent homelessness, especially among vulnerable groups such as pensioners. The situation requires coordinated efforts from the state, social welfare services, and local authorities.
