Somalia Sees Fierce Reactions to Israel's Recognition of Secessionist Somaliland

Somalia is reacting strongly to Israel's recognition of the secessionist Somaliland, with thousands of citizens taking to the streets across the country to protest. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned Israel's move as “the greatest violation of Somalia's sovereignty” and “a threat to the security and stability of the region.” The protests took place in many cities, including the capital Mogadishu, where protesters held Somali and Palestinian flags. Imams and citizens condemned the Israeli decision, calling on Somaliland not to accept the recognition. Somaliland, which seceded from Somalia in 1991 and operates autonomously, had not been recognized as a state by any other country until today. Israel's recognition has provoked strong reactions, as Somalia considers Somaliland an integral part of its territory. Israel defended its decision, arguing that it has the right to determine its foreign policy and that other countries recognize a Palestinian state. The situation remains tense and protests and diplomatic clashes are expected to continue.
