Gaza Storm: Six Dead, Including a Child, as Floods Wreak Havoc

A strong storm hit the Gaza Strip, causing widespread flooding and damage to tents and homes sheltering displaced people. According to local officials, at least six people have died, including two women and a girl, when houses near the Gaza beach collapsed. A one-year-old boy died of hypothermia in a tent. The storm caused severe damage to thousands of tents, many of which were uprooted, leaving families exposed to the elements. Residents struggled to protect their belongings and reinforce their shelters, but conditions were extremely difficult. Following the ceasefire, Gaza's population has been confined to a narrow zone along the coast, with over two million people living in makeshift shelters or damaged buildings. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of fuel and equipment to deal with emergencies, as much of the necessary fleet has been destroyed during the war. A UN report warned as early as December that hundreds of displacement facilities were at risk of flooding. The UN and the Palestinian Authority estimate that 300,000 new tents are urgently needed for 1.5 million displaced people, as existing shelters are in poor condition.
