Possible Extension for Vehicle Recalls Due to Takata Airbags Being Considered

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis announced that an extension of the deadline for the final vehicle recalls affected by defective Takata airbags is being considered. The original deadline for implementing the recalls was February 3, 2025, with a new deadline of October 3, 2025. The minister stated that the possibility of achieving the goal of completing all recalls within eight months is being evaluated, and that efforts have been made to encourage public participation. Two large information campaigns have been carried out, and a new one is running in the media. TOM is continuously working to be updated by distributors and to urge them to implement the recalls. Some manufacturers have strengthened their workshops and established new garages, while others have brought in mechanics from abroad. However, the minister stressed that the recalls are the result of private action and depend on the cooperation between distributors and citizens. The Road Safety Council meeting discussed the reactivation of the Road Safety Unit as a central hub for receiving and disseminating information, as well as the establishment of a mutual information mechanism between stakeholders. The aim is to restore the information chain and strengthen the institutional functioning around road safety.
