The Miracle of Healing the Lepers

This Sunday's Gospel passage (Luke 17:12-19) recounts the miracle of Jesus Christ healing ten lepers. Metropolitan Seraphim Kykkotis of Zimbabwe analyzes the historical context of leprosy in the 1st-century Palestine, where it was an incurable and socially ostracizing disease. Lepers were isolated to protect society, but Jesus welcomed them with love and healed them. Only one of the ten healed lepers returned to thank Jesus, and he was a Samaritan, considered a foreigner and sinner by the Jews. The author emphasizes that the faith of the healed man was the cause of his healing and that the ingratitude of the nine does not diminish the importance of faith. The virtue of one person can benefit the entire society, and that is why we honor saints and heroes.
