Interior Ministry Rejects Claims of Misleading Regarding Co-owned Buildings Bill

The Ministry of Interior rejects accusations made by the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, Aristos Damianos, regarding misleading practices concerning the promotion of the bill for co-owned buildings. The Ministry emphasizes that the government has made every effort to submit a functional and implementable bill. The Ministry states that the need for the immediate promotion of the bill was highlighted from the beginning, as it will resolve long-standing problems affecting owners and tenants. The bill was prepared as early as 2023, before the establishment of the Provincial Self-Government Organizations (PSGOs). A consultation followed with the PSGOs, who were informed about the provisions of the text. Taking into account the concerns of the PSGOs, a new consultation was held, and the Department of Lands and Surveys prepared a study on the operational framework and cost of the bill. The study shows that the additional staff required by the PSGOs will not exceed 30 people island-wide, and their payroll costs will be covered by the proposed fees. The Ministry of Interior announces that a new meeting will be convened with the PSGOs for further consultation and the bill will be resubmitted to the Parliament.
