Ministry of Agriculture: No Negative Impact on Cyprus from Mercosur Agreement

The Ministry of Agriculture assures that the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur is not expected to have negative effects on Cyprus. The Director-General of the Ministry, Andreas Georgiou, stated that the agreement, which has been under discussion for 25-27 years, has been assessed as beneficial for both the European Union and the Latin American countries. Although Cyprus has a trade deficit with the Mercosur countries, the agreement may create new opportunities for businesses, particularly in the industrial and services sectors. Furthermore, Cyprus has secured compensatory measures amounting to 45 million euros for the period 2028-2032, to support the primary sector. Regarding halloumi, it has been ensured that it will not be affected by the agreement.
