Phenotype: The New Strategic Infrastructure for the Primary Sector in Cyprus

Published January 19, 2026, 19:20

Cypriot agriculture is entering the age of artificial intelligence with the implementation of the 'PHENOTYPE' strategic infrastructure at the Tochni Experimental Station. This system, consisting of plant growth units, sensors, and a computer for parameter recording, allows real-time monitoring of plant physiological responses. A robot automates data collection from 250 different plants, while soil sensors measure growth conditions. Researchers can control the effect of different amounts of fertilizer and water on plant development. 'PHENOTYPE' offers the ability to take measurements without human intervention, even remotely, and is a survival tool for dealing with extreme weather events. The project is funded by the 'THALEIA 2021-2027' Cohesion Policy Program with co-financing from the EU.
