Does the EU Need Further Enlargement?

The European Union is considering further enlargement, with nine countries having already applied for membership. However, this process is not straightforward and raises questions about the readiness of candidates and the impact on the Union's effectiveness. Enlargement can strengthen the security and credibility of Europe as a democratic bloc, especially in a period of geopolitical challenges such as Russian aggression, America's inward turn, and China's growing influence. Avoiding the creation of fragile states on the EU's borders is crucial for regional stability. Economically, the previous enlargement in 2004 had positive effects on new members, increasing per capita GDP and improving living standards. Older members also benefited from the enlargement, with increased income and greater regional stability. However, each enlargement must be carefully considered. The accession of small countries like Montenegro and Albania is seen as a low-cost – high-return option, while the case of Ukraine is more complex due to the ongoing war and reconstruction needs. The EU needs a more flexible approach to Ukraine, prioritizing the deepening of ties within the framework of existing agreements.
