Expansion of Free Transport Scheme for Students from Five-Member Families

AKEL MP Andreas Pasourtidis has submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of Transport regarding the expansion of the free transport scheme for students from five-member families. Mr. Pasourtidis emphasized the need for substantial support for these students due to the increased cost of travel for families with many children, especially when they study away from home. The Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, responded that students already benefit from a 50% discount on regular bus routes. In addition, he stated that for the school years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027, children from five-member and large families are exempt from paying fares in secondary education. However, this response does not cover tertiary education students. The Ministry of Transport is in the process of examining the proposal to include students from five-member and large families in the beneficiaries of free transport. Data has been requested from the Pan-Cypriot Organizations of Large Families and Five-Member Families to estimate the cost, without however a timeline being set for the implementation of the measure. Mr. Pasourtidis' question highlights a social gap in transport policy, as the cost of travel remains high for students, especially those from families with limited resources. Expanding the free transport scheme would contribute to equal access to education and support families with increased burdens.
