AKEL Criticizes Net Billing Transition Without Battery Support

AKEL has expressed strong concerns regarding the gap created by the termination of government support schemes for residential photovoltaics and energy upgrades. The party argues that the lack of immediate replacement for these schemes undermines the green transition and creates uncertainty for households seeking to reduce their energy costs. Furthermore, AKEL criticizes the transition to net billing without the parallel development of an affordable energy storage market, claiming that this reduces benefits for households and transfers them to private companies. AKEL proposed a series of measures to address these issues, including the continuation of net metering for vulnerable groups and apartment tenants, combined support for photovoltaics with storage and energy upgrades, the creation of programs for energy communities, the establishment of subsidized energy audits, and the inclusion of newer homes in support schemes. In his letter to the Minister of Energy, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou requests immediate information on the new support schemes and the measures that will be taken to make energy storage accessible to all. The party emphasizes the need for a fair and sustainable energy policy that takes into account the needs of citizens and promotes the green transition. The criticism from AKEL focuses on the lack of planning and the delay in implementing measures that will ensure the continuation of support for green energy and energy efficiency after the termination of existing programs.
