The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted Cyprus's role as a reliable actor in shaping critical European decisions, following the completion of the College of Commissioners' work in Cyprus, as part of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Christodoulides stressed that the Cypriot Presidency will act as an honest mediator, with an emphasis on practical implementation and the strategic autonomy of the EU. The central theme of the discussions was the strengthening of EU defence and security, with von der Leyen underlining the progress made and Cyprus's role in implementing the plans. Particular emphasis was placed on Ukraine, with the need to maintain European support in the field and at the diplomatic level. In the economic sphere, discussions focused on strengthening EU competitiveness, reducing bureaucracy and tackling energy costs. The importance of trade agreements for the EU's strategic autonomy was also highlighted. The Eastern Mediterranean was recognised as an area of geostrategic importance, with Cyprus promoting initiatives for dialogue and cooperation. Finally, President Christodoulides referred to Cyprus's readiness for full accession to the Schengen Area in 2026 and developments in the Cyprus issue, stressing the interest and support of the European Union.
