EU Informal Summit Focuses on Migration Returns and Schengen Security

The EU Informal Summit of Ministers of Interior Affairs and Justice, taking place in Nicosia, is dominated by discussions on achieving a comprehensive framework for the return of migrants to their countries of origin and on security parameters within the Schengen area. The Undersecretary for Migration, Nicolas Ioannides, emphasized the EU's commitment to the timely implementation of the Asylum and Migration Pact, as well as the advancement of negotiations on the return regulation. The discussion focuses on ways to facilitate the return of third-country nationals who do not have the right to reside, with the contribution of the International Organization for Migration and Frontex. Specifically, returns to Syria and Afghanistan are being examined, focusing on convicted criminals and individuals who pose a threat to national security. Mr. Ioannides stated that Cyprus does not face a significant problem of secondary movements, due to its island nature, and that efforts are being made to eliminate them. In addition, he referred to possible increases in returns to Syria through a new plan for 2026, after the implementation of a pilot program. Schengen is a top priority, with emphasis on strengthening cooperation and information exchange between member states for effective border management and the protection of the common area.
