EASAC Report: Fire Suppression Alone is Insufficient – Challenges for Cyprus

A new report by the European Council of Academies of Science (EASAC) highlights that simply suppressing wildfires is no longer sufficient, given their increasing frequency and intensity due to climate change and other factors. The report emphasizes the need for investment in prevention, the creation of resilient landscapes, early warning systems, and public awareness, alongside effective emergency response. Cyprus, as a member of EASAC and the location of the European Union's new Wildfire Hub, is called upon to play a leading role in the scientific and technological response to the problem. The report also mentions the need for scientific risk assessment, cooperation between countries, and the adoption of policy decisions tailored to local conditions. Furthermore, it points out that fires are now affecting areas that have historically not been vulnerable, even near urban areas.
