AKEL Criticizes Deepening Military-Political Cooperation with Israel

AKEL has voiced strong concerns regarding the deepening military-political cooperation between Cyprus and Israel, highlighting the potential risks and negative consequences of this choice. The party calls on the government to inform both political forces and the public about the precise content of recent meetings and agreements concluded with Israel. AKEL questions the assumption that Israel will offer protection to Cyprus against Turkish aggression, pointing out that past experience with trilateral schemes did not prevent Turkish actions. Furthermore, the party argues that the government, by showing tolerance for Israel's violations of international law (such as occupation and settlement), undermines its own credibility in the struggle to end the Turkish occupation of Cyprus. Cyprus's recent abstention from a joint statement by 14 countries condemning the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank was characterized as self-negation.
