Trump Calls Off Second Wave of Strikes Against Venezuela

Published January 9, 2026, 10:46

Donald Trump announced the cancellation of a second wave of strikes against Venezuela, initially planned, through a post on Truth Social. He stated that this decision is due to the Venezuelan government's release of a large number of political prisoners, which he views as a gesture of goodwill towards peace. Trump emphasized that the US and Venezuela are cooperating successfully in the reconstruction of oil and natural gas infrastructure, aiming for a more modern and efficient form. He argued that this cooperation makes the second round of strikes unnecessary, however, US ships will remain in the area for security reasons. Furthermore, the former president mentioned that an investment of at least $100 billion from major oil companies is expected in Venezuela's infrastructure. He is scheduled to meet with representatives of these companies at the White House today to discuss the investment details. The announcement comes during a period of heightened tension in US-Venezuela relations, with previous sanctions having significantly impacted the country's economy. The cancellation of the strikes and the prospect of investment signal a potential shift in US policy towards Venezuela, focusing on economic cooperation and peaceful resolution of disputes.
