Concerns Raised Over Spraying in Chlorakas, Paphos Municipality Responds

Significant concern has been expressed by the Chlorakas Environmental and Cultural Association (PPOA) regarding the extensive spraying of herbicides in public areas in Paphos. The PPOA argues that the use of chemical substances is an unnatural practice that pollutes the soil, groundwater, and harms biodiversity, while proposing alternative solutions such as the use of lawnmowers. Furthermore, questions are raised regarding the approval and control procedures of the chemicals used. The Paphos Municipality, through the head of the Public Health and Environment Department, Dr. Christos Christou, assures that the use of herbicides is only carried out in specific cases and with strict adherence to the conditions. These cases mainly concern areas where the safety of workers is at risk, such as steep locations, or where mechanical clearing is impossible. Dr. Christou emphasized that the Municipality's Green Service prioritizes the cleaning of open spaces to prevent fires and control rodents. The use of chemicals is avoided in areas with running water to protect aquatic life. The Paphos Municipality assures that strict instructions are followed regarding the dosage and protective measures listed on the herbicide labels, with the aim of ensuring public health and protecting the environment. However, the PPOA insists on the need for more environmentally friendly solutions and greater transparency in the control procedures.
