Antonio Costa: EU Will Continue to Defend Its Interests

European Council President Antonio Costa stated that the EU will continue to defend its interests and pursue the stabilization of trade relations with the US, despite recent transatlantic tensions. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual respect in relations with allies, while acknowledging the need to strengthen European strategic autonomy in the areas of defense and competitiveness. The EU fully supports Denmark and Greenland in matters concerning their sovereignty and remains committed to international law. Costa welcomed the avoidance of new tariffs from the US, but stressed that the EU will protect its interests from any form of coercion. He also expressed reservations about the statute of the Peace Council, particularly regarding its scope and compatibility with the UN Charter. At the same time, the EU is ready to cooperate on a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, with a Peace Council functioning as a transitional administration. The EU's priority remains the implementation of its agenda for its citizens, which includes strengthening defense, competitiveness and strategic autonomy. Overall, the EU seeks to maintain stable relations with the US, protect its interests and strengthen its position on the world stage, while also promoting peace and security in the region.
