Supreme Court to Rule on MP Sykas' Immunity Today

The Supreme Court is expected to deliver a ruling today regarding the request for the lifting of MP Nikos Sykas' parliamentary immunity, following allegations of assault by his partner. Despite the withdrawal of the complaint by the woman, the Legal Service maintains that the case should proceed. Mr. Sykas' lawyer, Christos Pourgourides, stated that there is no objection to the lifting of immunity, but questioned the possibility of proving the charges without testimony from the complainant. He argued that the complainant cannot be considered a victim without a court conviction and that the withdrawal of the complaint raises questions about proving the offenses. The Assistant Attorney General, Savvas Angelides, emphasized that case law is clear and that the court does not examine the sufficiency of the evidence, while a court order has been issued prohibiting the MP from approaching the victim.
