From Celebrations to Deep Concern: Nicosia Doesn't Yet Know How to Respond to Trump's Invitation

Nicosia is facing a diplomatic dilemma as it is called upon to respond to Donald Trump's invitation to sign the Statute of the newly established Peace Council for Gaza. The invitation is accompanied by documents revealing that the Peace Council will operate in competition with the UN and address security and peace issues in various regions. Nicosia's initial reaction was positive, as the proposal was seen as recognition of Cyprus's role in the region. However, negative reactions from European diplomatic circles caused embarrassment, as the creation of the Peace Council is considered an undermining of the UN. Furthermore, questions are raised regarding the Statute, such as the provision for Donald Trump's lifetime presidency. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is thoroughly studying the documents, taking into account the legal and political dimensions, as well as Cyprus's diplomatic capabilities. Other European countries, such as France, Italy, Sweden, and Norway, have already expressed their opposition to the proposal, which facilitates Cyprus's position. Nicosia is expected to make a final decision soon, taking into account the potential consequences.
