From Cypriot Presidency to Mercosur and Kallas

During the recent plenary session of the European Parliament, President Christodoulides presented the priorities of the Cypriot presidency, focusing on the EU's strategic autonomy. Despite the positive impressions, MEP Demetris Papadakis raised questions about the EU's consistency in principles and solidarity, specifically mentioning the lack of similar sanctions against Turkey compared to Ukraine and the Turkish occupation of Cyprus. Furthermore, issues were raised regarding the increase in energy supply from sources outside the EU and its impact on strategic autonomy. Regarding the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, the European Parliament decided to refer it to the Court of Justice of the EU to determine its compatibility with the EU Treaties. Finally, a verbal clash occurred between D. Papadakis and the EU High Representative, Ms. Kallas, regarding the omission of reference to the Turkish occupation of Cyprus.
