Archbishop: Election of New Paphos Metropolitan in 3-4 Months – Process Will Differ Significantly

The Archbishop of Cyprus announced that the election of the new Metropolitan of Paphos is expected to be completed within 3-4 months, following the approval of the new statute. The new process will be simpler and will avoid the tensions and divisions that have been observed in the past, as the laity will not be involved. The Archbishop emphasized that the Holy Synod will have the opportunity to better evaluate candidates and promote individuals without ulterior motives. Anyone who wishes can submit an application, while he referred to the case of the former Metropolitan of Tychikos, who did not sign the creed and resorted to legal appeals. The Archbishop rejected accusations of damage to the prestige of the Church of Cyprus, arguing that the Church reacted promptly to prevent potential schisms. He expressed the view that the Church not only maintained its prestige but also elevated it by addressing phenomena of zealotry and attempts to exploit ecclesiastical tensions. Regarding the former Metropolitan of Tychikos, the Archbishop noted that if he changes his attitude, there is a possibility of retaining priestly office, but if he continues on the same path, he sees no other way out. He believes that the former Metropolitan is being led astray by others. The statements were made after the end of an Archiepiscopal Divine Liturgy, presided over by the Archbishop and concelebrated by the Hegumen and fathers of the Holy Monastery of Saint Neophytos.
