Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis paid tribute to the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, describing him as a great personality who left an indelible mark on the modern history of the island. In his funeral oration, Gerapetritis emphasized the late President's gentleness, conciliatory nature, and integrity, as well as his erudition and deep democratic conscience. Gerapetritis stated that Vassiliou was a man who “elevated the art of synthesis to a life axiom” and “expressed Aristotelian moderation better than anyone.” He praised Vassiliou's reformist work, emphasizing that he laid the foundations for 21st-century Cyprus, despite the difficulties caused by the Turkish invasion. He particularly mentioned the founding of the University of Cyprus, characterizing it as a significant milestone in the island's educational history. He also referred to Vassiliou's commitment to International Law and the activation of the international community to resolve the Cyprus issue, emphasizing Greece's continued support for Cyprus. Gerapetritis described Vassiliou's leadership in the negotiations for Cyprus's accession to the European Union as the “opus magnum” of his career, emphasizing that Cyprus was fully prepared when the political process was completed. In closing, he described Vassiliou as a “pragmatic patriot” with close ties to Greece, expressing the condolences of the Greek nation.
