UN Security Council Discusses Deteriorating Situation in Syria

The UN Security Council convened to discuss the situation in Syria, with a focus on the escalating confrontation between the Syrian transitional government and Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria. UN officials expressed concern about the risk of further destabilization. A call was made for the swift implementation of recent ceasefire agreements, the protection of civilians, and the preservation of gains made during the transitional period. It was highlighted that recent clashes have displaced tens of thousands of people, particularly in Aleppo. Greece, through its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, acknowledged the progress made in Syria but emphasized the continuing challenges, such as inclusion, security, and the protection of the rights of all Syrians. Ms. Balta welcomed the Syrian government's recognition of Kurdish identity but stressed the need for full implementation of the ceasefire.
