Damianos: 'Royal and GSI are not competitive' - What he said about Cyfield

Energy Minister Michalis Damianos discussed the Vasilikos project, the GSI electric cable, and the utilization of natural gas on the show 'Mesimeri kai Kati'. He pointed out that research has been conducted at the European level regarding Vasilikos, but the government does not have more information than is already known. He emphasized that nothing reprehensible emerges from the official contracts, however, he acknowledged that there may be problems not visible in the documents. Damianos stated that a French company has been selected for the technical evaluation of the project, which has already completed an extensive analysis. ETYFA is called upon to submit a proposal for the next stage, so that the procedures for selecting a new contractor can begin. The Minister warned that schedules in Cyprus are often extended due to bureaucratic procedures. Regarding potential investors, Damianos said he had no information. He clarified that Cyfield has no role in the Vasilikos project, but could be one of the sites that could receive natural gas in the future. Today, only EAC has the ability to receive natural gas. Regarding the GSI electric cable, Damianos clarified that ADMIE is the implementing agency and Nexans is the subcontractor. The Republic of Cyprus does not have a direct contractual relationship with Nexans. The update of the studies has been completed and the selection of the house that will proceed to the next stage is expected. No decision has yet been made on Cyprus's equity participation in the project, but the critical issue is electricity sufficiency and interconnection with larger markets.
